Esther Ethel Nelson

Esther Ethel NelsonEsther Ethel Nelson was born April 27, 1909 to Charles and Anna (Larson) Haglund, both of Sweden, at the family home in the Moss Lake District. In 1918 the family moved to a farm two miles south of Norquay where they lived in cramped quarters while they built a new Eaton’s house for the family of mom, dad and four girls.

Esther went to school in Norquay for the first eleven grades and then to Winnipeg to do grade twelve. She followed this level of education with a year at Normal School in Regina to prepare for teaching at Prairie Valley School north east of Norquay.

Her formal teaching career ended when the school burned down on a weekend while she was home visiting family.

April 15, 1933 Esther married George Nelson and together they farmed until they moved to town in 1984. Esther continued to teach following her marriage but now her classes were at church in the Sunday school, Trailblazers, and with her children at home.

She loved the Lord and His people. She willingly gave her time and energy, taking a turn or two as president of the women ministries group. Daily she read God’s word and her worn out Bible and all her little hand written note books are witness to her study habits.

She loved to garden and well into her 90’s she tended and gathered her vegetables and berries. (There never was any raspberry jam as good as Grandma’s). Everyone of the family has a quilt that Esther made, a pair of mittens, or a painting. She didn’t pick up a brush until her 60’s but her paintings were amazing from the start. Esther loved to watch curling and football on TV. She and George had curled in their senior years and she remained a fan. The TV had to be loud and she had to sit close enough to see but she knew the curlers and appreciated the shot making.

Esther said her favourite thing was to have grandchildren and great grandchildren in the house. She was endlessly patient with the little ones and loved them all. There are 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren that will miss her welcoming smile and the prayers she offered up on their behalf.

Esther was predeceased by her beloved husband, George; daughter in law, Barbara Nelson; sisters, Gladys Benson, Mabel Norlander, and Evelyn Bergreen.

Surviving Esther are 6 children; Oriole (Fred) Livingstone; Dwight (Anne); Lyle (Caroline); Larry (fianc? Gwen); James (Judy); Yvonne (Forbes) VanDellen; a brother Robert (Paula) Haglund; sister in law Anna Nystedt; many nieces and nephews; and god children, Wally Butterfield and Ruth Wylie.
